How do you know how much wrapping paper you need when wrapping a gift? Perhaps with a gift box like this, it is simple to determine:
But what about boxes or gifts like these?
Surface area is the area of the outer surface of solids. This tells us how much wrapping paper we would need to cover the outside of the figure.
From the previous target on Classify Solids we learned about the different faces of a solid. We use these faces to determine the total surface area of a solid
BASE AREA (\(B\))
Area of the base of the 3 Dimensional Figure
LATERAL SURFACE AREA (\(LSA\) or \(LA\))
Area of the lateral faces of a 3 Dimensional Figure
TOTAL SURFACE AREA (\(TSA\) or \(SA\))
the surface area of ALL of the faces (or the entire outer surface) combined
Includes the base(s) and the lateral faces
Select the object below to learn about the Surface Area.
